One Book Programming The American Library Association offers a CD of resource materials for One Book programming. The Center for the Book at the Library of Congress lists One Book programs across the nation. Sample Discussion Questions Sources include discussion questions provided by Cather Foundation Board Members: Dr. Charles Peek, University of Nebraska—Kearney; Dr. Bruce Baker, Professor Emeritus, University of Nebraska—Omaha; Dr. Steve Shively, Associate Professor, Northwest Missouri State University; Laurie Smith-Camp, Federal Judge; Dr. John Murphy, Professor Emeritus, Brigham Young University; Betty Kort, Executive Director, Cather Foundation; and questions from One Book One Chicago: My Ántonia, reprinted with permission from the One Book, One Chicago resource guide on My Ántonia, created by the Chicago Public Library. Additional sites below researched by Dee Yost, Public Services Librarian, Hastings College. Other Sources for Study Questions: Other Suggestions: Preparation Place discussion questions on narrow strips of paper that can also serve as "bookmarks" and give the "bookmarks" to discussion participants ahead of the scheduled discussion. Provide several opportunities at different times on several different days and evenings for groups to meet for discussions. Ask individuals to write personal invitations to others to join in discussion groups. Serve food with discussions to "sweeten" the conversations. Discussion leaders Discussion leaders should introduce themselves and ask participants to do the same. Before going to the discussion questions, ask participants if they enjoyed the book and to share what they liked/disliked most about the book. Ask for first impressions, comments, or questions. Do not feel obligated to discuss all of the questions prepared. End the formal discussion in a timely manner. Willa Cather Foundation 413 North Webster Street Red Cloud, Nebraska 68970 |
