"The feeling of the rain on you is sweet. It seems to bring feelings you had when you were a baby. It carries you back into the dark, before you were born."

Front Hall
Upon entering the childhood home, one first encounters the narrow front hall. If visitors employ their imaginations, and invoke the crampedness of 11 inhabitants occupying a small space, they will understand the lack of privacy that informs much of Cather's writing about her childhood.

"The front hall was dark and cold; the hat-rack was hung with an astonishing number of children's hats and caps and cloaks. They were even piled on the table beneath the hat-rack. Under the table was a heap of rubbers and overshoes."
