The Visitor Services Coordinator, a newly-created full-time exempt position, will report to the Education Coordinator and will support the Willa Cather Foundation’s mission through education and customer service. The Coordinator will play a meaningful role in shaping an outstanding visitor experience for supporters and guests who visit the National Willa Cather Center.

About the WCF: The Willa Cather Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that promotes the legacy of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Willa Cather through education, preservation, and the arts. Since its founding in 1955, the WCF has been located in Red Cloud—a small and vibrant community in south-central Nebraska.

Essential Duties:

  • Greet all visitors and groups by creating a welcoming and friendly environment where they receive prompt, efficient and pleasant service
  • Know the guided tour content; serve as a backup tour guide and assist with tours for large groups
  • Assist with special projects to broaden awareness of the organization and enhance the visitor experience
  • Anticipate and respond to visitor needs by providing accurate and helpful information about the National Willa Cather Center and its offerings in person, over the phone, and via email
  • Record and track visitor traffic and demographic information
  • Solicit feedback, suggestions, complaints and compliments about visitor experiences and make the leadership team aware of such feedback
  • Act with integrity and honesty in safeguarding museum income, working with cash, credit cards, and all financial transactions
  • Update the master calendar to include special events, special guests, tours, programs, and other activities
  • Open and close the museum and bookstore daily, including reconciling workstation drawer, securing cash, and organizing the day's deposit at closing
  • Work with other museum staff to ensure the museum’s website, publications, sites, and events are accessible to all
  • Educate visitors about the benefits of membership and facilitate membership discounts on purchases
  • Manage bookings of the Foundation’s lodging properties
  • Help with scheduling and staffing of the museum, events, and tours

Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred, but relevant coursework in education, business, tourism, hospitality, the humanities, or the fine arts will also be considered
  • Prior experience in the museum, hospitality, or customer service field is preferred, but not required

  • An understanding of literature, the humanities, and the arts

  • Adeptness to reprioritize projects as new assignments arise
  • The flexibility to work as part of a small team that often wears multiple hats

Schedule and Work Environment: Generally eight-hour days, Monday through Friday. Some Saturdays and occasional weekend events.

Salary and Benefits: A competitive wage will be based on experience. Benefits, including health insurance, IRA, paid holidays, and paid time off (PTO) are available. Housing and relocation support are also available.
