Community Events: Free and Open to the Public!

Join us for free events during our annual Spring Conference!

The National Willa Cather Center will host its 67th annual Spring Conference June 2–4 2021. Literary Prizes: Acclaim & Controversy will examine the distinctly modern phenomenon of cultural prizes in the 100th year celebration of Willa Cather's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, One of Ours.

In addition to the paid portion of the conference, we are also hosting several events in Red Cloud on Saturday, June 4—the last day of the conference—that will be open to the greater community, free of charge. We invite visitors to join us at the Willa Cather Memorial Prairie and for other events during the day.

Our Red Cloud Opera House Gallery and National Willa Cather Center Bookstore will also be open from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. for viewing and browsing, as well as our permanent exhibit, American Bittersweet.

Join us in celebration, visit with our staff and old friends, and have some refreshments while you visit!

Friday LIVE taping with Genevieve Randall of Nebraska Public Media at the Red Cloud Opera House • 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. — Join Genevieve Randall and Nebraska Public Media for this special event as they tape their weekly arts and culture program, Friday LIVE, from the Red Cloud Opera House stage. Genevieve will be joined by special guests and performers as we preview the Spring Conference and arts events in the region! [You can find updates about guests here and the program will air on Friday, June 3, at 10:00 a.m.]

This will be taped before a live studio audience, so plan to arrive early and enjoy music, interviews, and a behind-the-scenes look at radio production!

Guided Prairie Walk and Readings at the Willa Cather Memorial Prairie, located five miles south of Red Cloud at the Kansas border, on Highway 281 • 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. — Join our education staff at the Willa Cather Memorial Prairie for a guided prairie experience! Along the way, we'll share Cather readings that explore her relationship with and sentiments for the Nebraska prairie. Of note is that June 4 is National Prairie Day and what better way to celebrate our magnificent and place defining landscape? You'll also be able to see our recent installation of informative signage.

Soundstitching Exhibit at the Red Cloud Opera House Gallery • Enjoy some beautiful art and browse our National Willa Cather Center Bookstore from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Our current exhibit, Soundstitching: Sites and Sounds of Willa Cather's World with Cassia Kite and Dr. Stacey Barelos, will run through June 11. The exhibit transforms the colors from hand-stitched images of locations from Cather's life into playable musical compositions, creating a multidisciplinary and multisensory experience.
