"Ever afterward the Bishop remembered his first ride to Ácoma as his introduction to the mesa country. One thing which struck him at once was that every mesa was duplicated by a cloud mesa, like a reflection..."

Death Comes for the Archbishop

We hope you'll join us in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for a 3-day, 3-night excursion, November 10–13, 2026! We’ll explore the vibrant city center and the best of its historic and arts offerings, while learning about Cather’s time in New Mexico. We’ll discuss and share from Cather’s Death Comes for the Archbishop and The Professor’s House, as well as a host of selected outside readings, in addition to touring the New Mexico History Museum, the Museum of International Folk Art, the San Miguel Chapel and so much more. A New Mexico Cultural Pass that covers admission to some of our excursions plus additional New Mexico cultural sites is included as part of this year's immersion package! Our time together will be hosted by the Inn of the Governors, located within walking distance of Santa Fe Plaza.

This year we are also delighted to offer a special add-on tour of the Acoma Pueblo and Sky City Cultural Center on the morning of November 10th before making our way to Santa Fe. If you can get to Acoma, we've got the rest covered!

Want to get a head start on reading Cather before the trip? Add our curated book bundle! Titles include Death Comes for the Archbishop; The Professor's House, edited by Melissa J. Homestead; Willa Cather and the American Southwest, edited by John N. Swift and Joseph R. Urgo; and The Bright Edges of the World: Willa Cather and Her Archbishop, by Garrett Peck.

Long considered a mecca for writers, artists, and travelers, Santa Fe continues to be a magnetic hub for creative pursuits as well as literary and cultural tourism. "Echoes of the Archbishop" explores the author's own experiences visiting Santa Fe and immersing herself in the rich history of the region.

For more information about the Inn of the Governors, please consult their website. If you are registered for a shared or private room and plan to arrive early or leave late and want to book an extra night, you will book with Inn of the Governors directly and we will do all we can to make sure you don't need to change rooms.
