The National Willa Cather Center welcomed artist Matilda Essig of Sonoita, Arizona, on October 4, 2019. Essig has created a digital imagery folio suite entitled Native Grasses of the Apache HighlandsHer work centers on the subtle diversity that underlies ecosystems worldwide and examines the complex relationships within a grasslands community not unlike the Willa Cather Memorial Prairie.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Matilda Essig is a traditionally trained fine artist whose career has been devoted to conservation of the natural world. Recent work in natural science illustration and interpretive design has left her with a passion to preserve America's open spaces and a desire to see art address relevant issues.
