Read Across Red Cloud

Red Cloud, NE 68970
United States

If you've ever shared a beloved book with another person, you know the joy and excitement this small but meaningful act can bring. To highlight the value of books and reading, the National Education Association holds an annual Read Across America day every year on March 2, Dr. Seuss’ birthday. This year, the Willa Cather Foundation, Red Cloud Community Schools, Auld Public Library, Cherry Corners Estates, and Heritage Care Center are partnering to celebrate our inaugural Read Across Red Cloud event – a day for all ages to celebrate the joy and importance of reading.

How important is reading? Academic studies consistently demonstrate a strong correlation between reading and academic success, from kindergarten to university. Recently, the Forbes article “If You Want to Succeed in Business, Read More Novels” highlighted studies which show that reading increases our emotional intelligence, making us better at our jobs. Research on senior citizens shows that reading provides mental stimulation and reduces stress.

In other words, science proves what readers know to be true: reading books is good for you. In bringing a community of readers together on one special day, Read Across Red Cloud offers opportunities for residents to volunteer, to read, to share life experiences, and to celebrate the joy of reading. It is a day for those of us living in the region where Pulitzer Prize winner Willa Cather found inspiration for her novels to make reading a high priority.

Let's all join together on March 2, and every day thereafter, to ensure that everyone in Red Cloud enjoys a tradition of rich reading experiences.
