Prairie Writers' Workshop

"Fiction and Art": A fiction writing workshop, with a careful look at art and design in Nebraska narratives.

The Willa Cather Foundation would like to invite you to attend this year's Prairie Writers' Workshop scheduled for July 13 through 17. This is an exceptional opportunity for aspiring writers to gain insight from novelist, Timothy Schaffert. Four-hour workshops will be held throughout the week in the evenings. Participants will be encouraged to visit the Willa Cather Memorial Prairie to gain inspiration from the land and its rare forbs and grasses. The workshop will conclude with a public reception hosted by the Willa Cather Foundation Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. Schaffert will read from his collection, and writers will have the opportunity to share their work with the public.

Schaffert is a lecturer in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's English Department and teaches courses in fiction writing, literature, and composition. He has written three novels, all of which are set in Nebraska. His first novel, The Phantom Limbs of the Rollow Sisters, won the Nebraska Book Award for fiction. The second novel, The Singing and Dancing Daughters of God, was the Omaha Public Library's selection for the city's one-book-one-city project and was also featured nationally in the Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers program. His third novel, Devils in the Sugar Shop, received a starred review in Library Journal and was a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice. Schaffert is also the founder and director of a nonprofit literary organization; the (downtown) Omaha lit fest, as well as the director of the Nebraska Summer Writers' Conference.

Whether you are a beginning or professional writer, this workshop is an excellent opportunity to advance your skills. Please join us in July to learn from an established novelist and to experience the 608-acre Willa Cather Memorial Prairie.
