Purchase of the Dr. Gilbert McKeeby House
Purchase of the Dr. Gilbert McKeeby House
In April 2020, the Willa Cather Foundation purchased the Dr. Gilbert McKeeby house at the corner of 7th and North Cherry Streets in Red Cloud. Dr. McKeeby was the prototype for Dr. Howard Archie in Willa Cather's The Song of the Lark. Cather's interest in medicine as an adolescent prompted her to accompany Dr. McKeeby as he made his rounds through the town.
After several attempts to find a buyer who would want to restore the house, the Foundation made the decision to save it from possible destruction and to stave off the risk of further deterioration. We believe it is important that this part of Red Cloud’s history and Willa Cather’s life be preserved.
Initial plans to replace the roof and improve the exterior facade will both stabilize the home and enhance its curb appeal. We will continue to keep our members and the community updated as to the Foundation's site improvements and plans for the property.
If you are a preservation enthusiast or have a special affinity for Cather's The Song of the Lark, we welcome your support of this important undertaking. Tax-deductible donations to assist with the home's stabilization and preservation can be made online or mailed to The Willa Cather Foundation, 413 N. Webster Street, Red Cloud, NE 68970.
