Attention Educators: 2016-17 Student Outreach Opportunities

Another school year is ready to begin and we’d like to share some upcoming opportunities for students. If you have any questions about our free educational programs or bringing your students to Red Cloud, please contact Education Director Tracy Tucker, ttucker@willacather.org or 402-746- 2653. We hope to see you and your students soon!

  • On September 6, 2016, the WCF will host our 2nd Pollinator Workshop for elementary and middle school students. Pre- and post-workshop activities are available for use in the classroom that fulfill science standards SC5.1.1.g, SC5.1.1.h, SC5.3.1.b, SC5.3.2.b, SC5.3.3.c, SC8.3.3.f, as well as several language arts and social studies standards. The workshop and classroom activities also help to fulfill Strand 2 in Nebraska’s Excellence in Environmental Education guidelines. There is no cost for classroom materials or the workshop.
  • On September 29, 2016, the WCF will host Nebraska Shakespeare for a day of learning and theatre! Prior to a performance of Hamlet at 7:00 p.m. in the Red Cloud Opera House, Nebraska Shakespeare will host hands-on theatre workshops for high school students, focused on helping students understand Shakespearean language, interpreting drama, and stage combat. Workshops are free of charge to all high school students or classes and fulfill NSEA Fine Art Standards FA 12.5.1, FA 12.5.2 and FA 12.5.3. Students and educators who participate in workshops will receive free tickets to the evening’s performance. Please see the flyer below for more information.
  • As always, we hope that you will be teaching Cather in your English classrooms this year. The WCF offers curriculum units on Cather’s novels that include interdisciplinary activities and incorporate different modes of learning and reading levels. Our classroom materials meet current NSEA standards. Our virtual tour (www.virtualcather.org) supplements traditional classroom activities and gives students and teachers a content-rich, interactive way to experience Willa Cather—from around the state or the world! Fall is a perfect time to schedule this year’s class tour of our historic Willa Cather sites in Red Cloud. We offer a student rate of $4/student for a seven-building tour (1.5 hours), tailored specifically to your class readings and discussions. Contact Education Director Tracy Tucker to schedule a tour, ttucker@willacather.org or 402-746- 2653.
  • Finally, we offer two scholarships annually! Please share the application details and encourage your students to participate! The required essay can be developed from an in-class writing project and deadlines are in early 2017.
