"I have always loved making artwork, but the schools I attended did not offer art. As an adult, I attended many classes and workshops. Painting and drawing were my main interests, until a demonstration in the art of batik led me down a new path! In 1982, I joined two other artists in forming a group entitled “Sink, Inc. & Co.". Our artwork focused on women's daily lives. We began with a traveling show in galleries in Nebraska and surrounding states; this was my first time to exhibit my batiks.
"Batik is a messy business, and my studio at home was also known as the kitchen and laundry room. My main job as a farm wife was cooking, but batik and cooking in a small kitchen were a difficult combination. An artist friend suggested I rent a room next to her studio above the Strand Theatre in Hastings. I resisted at first, but was finally convinced to try it for a month; that trial run lasted 39 years. This past summer, I finished the move to a studio on the farm where I live. I still cook for the farmers on occasion, but there are not as many rules now; it is an enjoyable time with family. Farming, like time, moves faster than it used to!
"When my two artist friends and I started “Sink, Inc. & Co.” back in 1982, it was a time when it was difficult for women to be recognized in the art world. The three of us now show in various galleries, groups, and competitions. The Association of Nebraska Art Clubs has been a great part of my art life, as I am always learning with this group and making lifetime friends. I recently joined a group of Hastings artists called "The Art Connection". It is not an art club, and there are no rules, dues, or officers; it is open to everyone. Our meetings are held in studios and homes. The group works well together, and we have arranged some area exhibits. I feel that no matter what your passion, finding a group of like-minded people will feed that passion."
