University of Nebraska Press Scholarly Edition
Edited by Charles Mignon with Kari Ronning - Historical Essay & Explanatory Notes by James Woodress
Illustrations by W.T. Benda

The Cather Scholarly Edition is distinctive in its presentation of a wide range of biographical, historical, and textual information important to understanding the novel. The critical text is faithful to Cather's intentions for the novel as she prepared it for publication in 1918; the textual commentary describes Cather's involvement in its production, and her later revisions are clearly recorded in the apparatus. W.T. Benda's illustrations, omitted in many later reprintings, are included; Cather felt they were an integral part of the novel, while explanatory notes offer a comprehensive guide to its people, places, flora, fauna, and literary and historical allusions. The selection of historical photographs and maps helps illuminate the fiction of a writer who drew so extensively on actual experience.

Charles Mignon is a professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Kari Ronning is assistant editor of the Cather Scholarly Edition. James Woodress is the author of Willa Cather: A Literary Life (1987) and editor of Cather's The Troll Garden (1983).
