Reading Willa Cather — Bringing Communities Together

For decades, the novels of Willa Cather have done more than tell stories. They have enriched lives and brought people together for shared experiences. Through the generous support of a private foundation, we are excited to launch a new program that invites communities, libraries, schools, and organizations to come together to read My Ántonia or Death Comes for the Archbishop, two of Cather’s most beloved works.

Why These Novels

My Ántonia and Death Comes for the Archbishop are stories about the West that illuminate American history at distinct moments. Both novels depict enduring friendships fostered in the unfamiliar land they now call home. One is a story developed through first-hand memories of the struggles and hopes of immigrants and pioneers, while the other is a thoughtfully researched tale about the convergence of religion and diverse cultures on shared soil. Reading these works regularly sparks meaningful conversations about place, identity, heritage, and a sense of home.

What the Program Offers

Thanks to grant funding, participating institutions can request an array of free or discounted resources, including:

  • Free copies of the novels
  • Traveling exhibits about each of the novels offer an introduction to Cather’s life and the genesis for each of the books — ideal for libraries, galleries, or other third spaces
  • Book-club kits, complete with discussion guides, historical background, photographs, and prompts to help readers engage deeply
  • Guest speakers and facilitators, ready to lead book discussions, give historical context, or speak about the novels alongside Cather’s legacy and relevance today.

Traveling Exhibits

The National Willa Cather Center offers a number of curated exhibits that focus on Cather and her most famous works. Combining Cather's own words with highlights from our extensive archival and museum collections, these exhibits engage readers with crucial historical context paired with open-ended reflection. Each exhibit is available for short-term installation designed to fit libraries, classrooms, and other meeting spaces, and our staff can provide additional support through guest speakers, books, and discussion materials.

How to Get Involved

We invite schools, libraries, historical societies, museums, churches, community-centers, and civic groups to participate. Once your request is approved, you’ll receive the resources you need to get started — and we’ll help tailor the program for your community’s needs. Ready to request books, a program, or an exhibit?
